NSFAS 2027 Applications: Deadlines, Eligibility and What Students Should Prepare

Planning to study at a public university or TVET college next year and need help paying for it? The NSFAS 2027 application window closes this Saturday, 31 October 2026. Here’s what you need to know before then.

The NSFAS 2027 Deadline: 31 October, No Extension

Applications opened on 18 September 2026 and close at 23:59 on 31 October 2026. Late applications won’t be accepted.

You may have heard 18 November mentioned at the launch event. Ignore it. The NSFAS Board has confirmed there will be no extension. With over 51,000 applications in the first four days alone, expect the portal to be busy near the end.

Who Qualifies for NSFAS 2027 Funding

You must be a South African citizen or permanent resident, studying (or planning to study) at a public university or TVET college.

Your combined gross household income must be R350,000 or less a year, or R600,000 or less if you have a disability. “Gross” means before tax.

Families receiving the SASSA Child Support, Foster Care or Care Dependency grant qualify financially by default. The SRD grant doesn’t count. Private colleges are not covered.

Bursary or Loan? The Two NSFAS Funding Routes

If your household earns a little over the bursary limit, you may still qualify for a loan.

NSFAS Bursary Missing-Middle Loan
Household income Up to R350,000 (R600,000 with a disability) R350,000–R600,000 (undergraduate)
Repayment Not repaid if you meet academic requirements Must be repaid
Covers Tuition plus allowances Tuition, registration, learning materials, accommodation where applicable

Loan students don’t get living, personal-care or transport allowances, so plan for those costs.

Documents to Prepare for Your NSFAS 2027 Application

Every applicant needs the signed 2027 consent form. It must be signed by the parents, guardian or spouse you list, and by a parent or guardian if you’re under 18. Without it, your application will be rejected.

Some students need extra forms:

  • Declaration form – if you’re under 35 and your family details don’t match Home Affairs records
  • Vulnerable child declaration – for under-18s, completed by a social worker
  • Disability Annexure A – for applicants with a disability
  • Other papers if relevant – death certificate, divorce decree, retrenchment letter or proof of guardianship

Good news: you don’t need payslips, an IRP5, a SASSA letter or an affidavit. NSFAS checks income itself using your consent form.

Fill in forms in capital letters and black ink, sign by hand, and avoid correction fluid. Use the 2027 versions only.

How to Apply on myNSFAS Without Getting Stuck

Applying is free. Go to my.nsfas.org.za or the official NSFAS app and register with your own ID number, cellphone number and email. Don’t create a second account.

Enter your details exactly as they appear on your ID. Upload clear PDF or JPEG files (up to 20 MB each) with all corners visible.

Make sure you press Submit. A saved draft won’t be assessed. Keep the reference number NSFAS sends you by SMS.

Remember, NSFAS is funding, not admission. You still need to apply to your university or college separately.

What Happens After You Submit

Check your myNSFAS account regularly. If NSFAS asks for more documents, you’ll have 30 working days to upload them.

Funding decisions are expected in December 2026. If you’re rejected, you can appeal, with the appeal window reported as 10–24 December. Your funding is only confirmed once you register at your institution.
